RMIT University celebrated the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day by recognising 100 ways that women contribute to the School of Management.
Women account for more than half of the School’s full-time workforce and a significant proportion of sessional teaching staff and Higher Degree by Research students.
Participants in the lunchtime celebration were shown statistics and artefacts to demonstrate the depth and breadth of female contribution in the School. Examples included enhancing student learning experience and contributing to health, research outputs and the community.
Two women who demonstrate the link between the School and Community are Margaret Heffernan OAM and Ahona Guha.
Ms Herffernan received an Order of Australia Medal for her contributions to the gynaecological cancer and arts sectors. She discussed the influence of pioneer women and how this led to her involvement in cross-cultural and management education and Aboriginal issues in Central Australia.
Ms Guha spoke of her commitment to assisting people afflicted with severe stress through her voluntary contribution to Lifeline. She highlighted the challenges and joys of helping people who are suffering from the extremes of personal anguish.
Similar luncheons will be held throughout the year to celebrate the diversity of contributions made by the School of Management.
