Youth work leaders come to RMIT

Three of the nation's leading youth work professionals will delivery keynote speeches as part of RMIT University's "Youth Work Industry Leaders Series".

The series is designed to assist higher education and vocational students engage with the industry - to extend their learning and form professional networks.

Youth work is about realising justice for young people. It entails securing young people's wellbeing while recognising their moral status as human beings, their associated human rights, entitlements and obligations.

Tracey Ollis, lecturer, Bachelor of Youth Work in the School of Global Studies, Social Science and Planning, said the series was all about connecting students with the leaders in their profession.

"We are privileged to have such distinguished and experienced youth work professionals come to RMIT," Ms Ollis said.

The series comprises three forums:

  • Kati Krsevan, 12-2pm, Wednesday, 29 September - Storey Hall
    Ms Krsevan is the Director of the Office for Youth with the Department of Planning and Community Development, Victoria.
  • Bernie Geary, 12-2pm, Wednesday, 6 October - Storey Hall
    Mr Geary is Victoria's inaugural Child Safety Commissioner, respected for his 30-plus years of commitment to working with vulnerable children, young people and their families.
  • EmeritusProfessor Jim Ife, 12.30-2.30pm, Thursday, 7 October - Room 13, Level 2, RMIT Building 29
    Emeritus Professor Ife has been involved in social work education for more than 30 years. He is a former President of Amnesty International Australia and Human Rights Commissioner for the International Federation of Social Workers.

Ms Ollis, who will chair the forums, said they would provide students with the opportunity to engage directly with three highly respected industry leaders.
