PhD candidate set to fly
Joanne Hall, a PhD candidate with RMIT University's School of Mathematical and Geospatial Sciences, has been awarded a highly sought-after Australian Mathematical Society Lift-Off Fellowship.

The AustMS Lift-off Fellowships are designed to help recent PhD graduates in Mathematics and Statistics jump-start their career by giving them financial support between the submission of their PhD thesis and their first postdoctoral position. They are awarded on academic merit.
Ms Hall works on the interface between coding theory, combinatrics and geometry. Her fellowship will allow her to continue her work in this area, as well as partially support her collaboration with the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
As part of this scholarship, Ms Hall has arranged for a visit from Associate Professor Diane Donovan from the University of Queensland.
Ms Hall said: "This scholarship is a fantastic opportunity to continue high-level thinking" while waiting for her thesis to be approved.
Her supervisor, Dr Asha Rao, said Ms Hall gaining the fellowship was an amazing achievement as only three students had been awarded one this year.
"Joanne is a high-achieving PhD student in pure mathematics who has already published three journal articles (two in A and A* journals) and one conference paper.
"The international impact of her work is evident from the six-week postdoctoral program that she recently completed with the Slovakia Government as well as the one-year postdoctoral position that she will take up at Charles University, Prague, later this year."
