Census dates explained

The census date is the deadline by which you must take certain actions, such as drop a course or cancel your program without financial penalty. The census date applies to each course you are enrolled in.

Do not ignore your census date or it will cost you financially.

Note: Census dates cannot be extended.

* Check with your RMIT school to confirm the census dates for Summer and Spring courses. The census dates may vary depending on your commencement date.

What you must do by the census date

The tables below show what action you must take, how you can do it, and the penalties that apply if you fail to complete that action by the relevant census date.

In person at the Hub on your campus

Cancel your enrolment (drop all courses in your program).

Supply a valid Tax File Number in person to defer your student contribution to HECS-HELP or your tuition fees to FEE-HELP (if eligible – see Additional actions table below)

You will be required to pay your tuition fees up front and in full without access to HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP

Make a full up-front payment of your student contribution in person if you are not eligible to defer your fees i.e.: Permanent resident or New Zealand Citizen (see Additional actions table below)

Your enrolment will be cancelled

* If the census date falls on a weekend or public holiday and you need to complete the action in person, the deadline to do so is 5 pm on the last business day before the census date.

** Commencing international students: financial penalties may apply if you are a commencing international student. Refer to the RMIT refund policy www.rmit.edu.au/policies/refunds. If you are a commencing international student and have enrolled in the first semester of a program, you must cancel your enrolment by the applicable census date or you will remain liable for fees. Your application for refund cannot be processed if you do not cancel your enrolment.

Additional actions for students applying for Commonwealth assistance

Australian citizens or humanitarian visa holders in a government subsidised place

One of the following:

  • Supply a valid Tax File Number to defer your student contribution to HECS-HELP
  • Make a full up-front payment of your student contribution by the census date

Your enrolment will be cancelled

Australian permanent resident visa holders or New Zealand citizens in a government subsidised place

Make a full up-front payment (without discount) of your student contribution by the census date

Your enrolment will be cancelled

Australian citizens or humanitarian visa holders in a full-fee place who are eligible for FEE-HELP

Supply a valid Tax File Number by submitting a Request for FEE-HELP assistance form via Enrolment Online

You will not be able to defer your fees to FEE-HELP and will have to pay your fees upfront to the university
